Desert Winter

Welcome to the New Year!

I've been traveling about the country on business, so I haven't been able to be out exploring the desert this month....but, I have found some new cool places....and I mean COOL

...like this shot of the winter desert below

I went up to Vegas and was shown a new route that cuts through the back country of the Mojave National Preserve (a huge area that sits astride the California-Nevada border) to get there. It was AWESOME! Old train stations, weathered shacks and no people made for an extremely pleasant 3 hour drive through this area of the desert park.

While in Vegas, I had hoped to get out to the Valley Of Fire State Park, but I got too "busy" in town - funny how that can happen, right?;)

On the way home I crusied through the old Route 66 town of Amboy - another old desert spot worth checking out. Huge salt flats extend out beyond it and when the wind blows, it's quite a sight - almost like a blizzard in the middle of the desert, but all salt crystals!

Now that I'm back for the rest of the winter, I plan on hitting some of the more remote areas I had wanted to explore, but couldn't because of the summer heat. Temps have been in the low 60's during much of the day, which is nice, but at night it drops to freezing ...and buddy, you better be prepared or they will find you there come spring - freeze-dried!

I'll post some new pics in a week once I get back from a short jaunt to try out my new digital camera I got for Xmas (present to myself;)

Later!
