The Gold Hills
Sorry for the long delay in posting, I managed to catch some narly bug that had me side lined for a couple weeks.....plus it's real cold out in the desert at night these days, so I was being a wuss and staying in.
But, I'm better and back out in the field doing what I love the most - exploring the desert!
These are the gold hills out in Southern California -
Now I'm not going to say exactly where, because there's still gold to be found there! Not so much placer deposits (that what gold found on the surface near old riverbeds and streams is called) but thick veins of it running through the rock. Lot's of old mine shafts honeycomb the mountains in this area of the desert, so you have to watch your step and not end up at the bottom of some old shaft.
- note - many old mines have lethal amounts of methane gas in them so don't explore unless you know what you're doing, and NEVER alone! Wehn by myself, I just make a surface check and note it on my maps for later exploration with my prospector friends.
I plan on checking the Gold Hills out this febuary when the weather is mild and we can work outside all day in the sun. Should be fun. I've found lots of old glass bottles and jars from the 1800's here, so I know the o;d timers were working the area.
...and yes, there is LOT'S of gold left. I saw a US geological study where they estimated that only 5% of the gold has been recovered from this area of California. Excellent!
Happy Xmas all!
