Cougar Buttes
Up highway 247 and across the Johnson Valley in the California high desert, lies Cougar Buttes. It's a cool collection of rock formations that sit on BLM open land and is a great place to visit and explore. It gets it's name from the fact that long ago Cougars (or "Mountain Lions") used to live amongst the craggy peaks.
I've been there a couple times now and really enjoy it. Weekdays are the best time to go, as the weekend is ATV and moto-cross central for many of the locals and the noise is bothersome.
Here's a shot of the desert blooger mobile sitting near the base of the dreaded "Desert Apeman" cave. You can see it at the top of the rocks in the picture.
What lives in the cave? The locals say a huge ape-like creature dwells deep within it and that he only comes out at night to hunt and prowl the remote countryside. Be warned!
I did hear a low howl as the sun set, but was able to make my escape before anything emerged.
If you get the chance, go visit, but make sure you have 4wd as it's really sandy.
