Desert 4-Wheeling The Old Way

Here's how they did it in the old days! Guaranteed to get you there and back on a bag full of oats and a canteen of water...

desert prospector with his burro

How classic is this? The old desert prospector and his burro in search of gold and riches in the parched expanses of the American southwest. Did you know there are still lots of burros running about out in the desert? The modern prospector might have switched to jeeps and trucks, but the old faithful burro continues to wander the hills, this time in search of grass and water.

These guys are all descendants of escaped burro's that got away from their owners over a century ago and bred like rabbits out in the desolate hills and canyons. Many places where you can camp you'll still see them (Like Red Rocks Park in Nevada). They are hardy animals and can survive in temps that would broil a rattler.

I'll give you a little tip, though. They might be cute and you can be tempted to go up and feed one, but don't - they bite! Living out there in the dust and heat takes a real attitude and these rascals got it in spades. Wild burros are tough little cookies, trust me.
