Quail Springs Picnic Area
Here's a picture of one of the many awesome picnic areas within California's Joshua Tree State Park -
It's at Quail Springs and is a popular rock-climbing spot within the park too. If you drive into the park from the west entrance, it will be the first picnic area you come to (about 5 miles in, it's well-marked with a sign). Most of these spots are open from dusk till dawn for climbing and cooking out, but if you want to camp overnight, you'll have to go to one of the established campgrounds further in...which there are plenty of!
I'm working on a site that will feature my favorite Joshua Tree camping sites, so stay tuned for that...
