Desert Rattlesnake
This is a shot of the first rattlesnake I actually have ever seen in the desert. I was returning from watching the sun go down up in Covington Flats when I saw this guy making his way quite slowly across the road.
I jumped out and took his picture. He's quite fat, which comes as no surprise as the winter rains have caused a bumper crop of rabbits and small rodents in the high desert this year.
It's funny, because in over ten years of exploring the area around Joshua Tree National Park, I've never seen a live rattlesnake out here before. Just a few shed skins and the marks of side-winders in the sandy washes.
Pretty cool!
