Expedition Rig

Thought I might show you a pic of my "expedition" rig when I go out into the real deserted spots of the desert (plus I like any excuse to show off my cool desertblogger edition jeep;).

I have a cargo rack that attaches to the trailer hitch on the bumper (which is a Mopar after-market bumper I had put on). The rack is made by Warrior Products and is rated for about 250lbs. It also has an 8" lift on it so you can 4-wheel in tight spaces without banging the rack. It's very sturdy and pops off and on via a clovis pin in about 2 minutes, so you can dump it at the campsite if you want to go explore.

I keep two 6 gallon jerry cans of water on it, plus my "campbox" (a huge locking plastic foot-locker type box I got at Wal-Mart for about 9 bucks) on top of that I snug on a cooler and various small things (camp chairs, fire wood, etc). It's really handy as there is limited space in the jeep (even though I took out my rear seat).

I like to be able to saty out at least 5 days without re-supply and this rack allows me to do so. I keep my backpack and medical kit in the jeep with me at all times.

Of course a GPS or good compass and up to date maps are also a must, and I recommend you try out all your gear BEFORE you hit the trail - especially your 1st aid stuff and fire starters. Those flint and steel/magnisium block kits look nice on the box cover, but try starting a fire in a driving rain or howling wind with one and you'll soon learn why our cave men forefathers worshipped fire!

Well, it's friday here and I'm heading out for the weekend for some desert camping, so see ya' on the trail!
